The history of many Suffolk County towns dates back to the 1600's. The richness of our heritage spans the colonial period and the Revolutionary War...the evolution of the whaling, fishing and merchant maritime industries...the gilded age when the Vanderbilts' and other wealthy New York families built summer mansions in Suffolk...and much, much more.

Throughout our county and its many towns there are societies devoted to researching and preserving our past, from the settlements of the original native American settlers to the scientists and engineers that helped usher in the space age. If history is your passion you will find people whose interests match your own.

The Suffolk County Archivist has a comprehensive list of Historical Societies in our county.  Please CLICK HERE to learn more about these organizations.

Suffolk County Department of Parks also has a great list of Historic Districts and unique locations to visit http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/Parks/ParksHistory.aspx
